HEATH STREET CHURCH, HAMPSTEAD, NW3

Permanens recently completed the restoration of the two spires and belfry towers together with high level front gable and tracery window restoration of this gothic Baptist church over a 9 month period.

Our own craftsmen reformed mouldings, hoods, cornice and stone bands using bath stone dust and lime, profiling to existing details and our stone masons, carved new bath stone cornices and fixed indents, all carved on site.

Our works also involved removing the top two metres of the north spire top, split in eight places following a lightning strike, carving a new 2m tall section of ribbed solid bath stone spire top on site.

The discovery of an existing cast Iron structural rod set through the centre of the spire, resulted in the new spire top having to be formed in four pieces fixed together on site, and being hoisted through the scaffolding towers rather than craning in as one piece as originally planned.
